Sour, Stirred, Highball: The 5 Cocktail Templates That Unlock Everything
Great bartenders don't memorize 500 recipes. They understand a handful of templates and improvise. Once you see the structure underneath, every bottle on your shelf becomes a dozen drinks.
Here are the five that matter.
1. The Sour
Spirit + citrus + sweet. The classic ratio is 2 : 0.75 : 0.75 (2 oz base, 0.75 oz lemon or lime, 0.75 oz syrup). Shake, strain, done. A Whiskey Sour, a Margarita, a Daiquiri and a Gimlet are all the same drink with different bases. Add an egg white for a silky texture.
2. The Spirit-Forward (Stirred)
Spirit + fortified wine + bitters. Think Manhattan, Negroni, Martini. These are stirred, never shaken — you want silky, not aerated. The Old Fashioned is the minimalist version: spirit, sugar, bitters.
3. The Highball
Spirit + a long mixer over ice. Gin & Tonic, Mojito, Paloma, Dark 'n' Stormy. Roughly 1 part spirit to 3 parts mixer. The most refreshing category and the hardest to mess up.
4. Tiki
Rum + lime + tropical sweeteners (orgeat, falernum, pineapple). Layered, complex, garnished to the hilt. The Mai Tai and Jungle Bird live here. Balance is everything — good tiki is not a fruit bomb.
5. The Martini Family
Base + a whisper of vermouth or liqueur, stirred cold. Bracing and spirit-driven. The template for anything you want clean, cold and strong.
Why this matters
Learn these five and a recipe stops being a list to obey — it becomes a starting point. Out of lemon? A sour works with lime. No Cointreau? Try another orange liqueur. The structure holds.
Our premium collection is built on exactly these templates: 500+ recipes that take each structure and push it somewhere new — different bases, unexpected modifiers, pro techniques.
Stop memorizing recipes. Learn the 5 structural templates — sour, spirit-forward, highball, tiki and martini — and you can build any cocktail from what's on your shelf.
